Republicans’ anti-democratic, anti-Black plans for D.C. are a 19th-century throwback

This article appeared in the Washington Post's "Made By History" series in 2022. I wrote it as a response to the congressional Republicans who were calling to remove Home Rule in D.C. at the time. Unfortunately, DC statehood is a perennial issue. The arguments and history I present in this article remain evergreen.
